Under a big oak tree, a wife sits on a green bench and her husband stands with a gun. To the right, wheat fields and meadows stretch as far as the eye can see. Gainsborough, in his early twenties, painted this newly married couple. The painting is now in the National Gallery in London.
Robert Andrews and Frances Carter married in 1748. The background shows their land in Suffolk, in the east of England. Gainsborough loved painting landscapes. He put the couple on the left and used more than half of the picture for fields and sky. It is an unusual mix of a portrait and a landscape.
The painting stayed with the family for about 200 years and was not well known. When the National Gallery bought it in 1960, it became famous as a great work of 18th-century British art. In 1972, the critic John Berger argued that it shows landowners proudly displaying their property. His idea caused a lot of discussion.
A young couple is under a big tree. The man has a gun and a dog. The woman sits on a bench. Look at her lap. It is not finished! Behind them, you can see their big farm.

Part of the wife's lap was left unpainted. No one knows what was supposed to go there. Suggestions include a bird shot by her husband, a fan, a work bag, or a future child.
The wheat on the right grows in neat rows. This is said to show the use of a new seed drill, a machine that was spreading at the time. It may show that the couple were modern landowners who used new farming methods.
Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, and the couple lived near the town. Some even say that Gainsborough and Robert went to the same school in Sudbury, so the painter may have known his client well.
Gainsborough later became a busy portrait painter. In a letter to a friend, he wrote that he was sick of portraits and wanted to take his instrument to a sweet village and paint landscapes. You can see that wish in this wide landscape.
