A dazzling portrait of the woman the pompadour hairstyle is named after!
This full-length portrait shows Madame de Pompadour in a garden. She was deeply loved by King Louis XV of France and had great power at court. Her rose-pink silk dress is covered with lace and bows. On the left is a marble sculpture, and a little spaniel sits on the bench. The green leaves and flowers make her look even more splendid.
Madame de Pompadour loved painting, architecture and books, and she supported many artists. Boucher was one of her favorite painters, and he painted her several times. This one, from 1759, is thought to be his last portrait of her. The sculpture behind her recalls a statue of Love and Friendship that she ordered from the sculptor Pigalle. By this time, she had changed from the king's sweetheart to his trusted friend.
She died in 1764 at the age of 42. The painting passed to her brother and later joined the collection of the Hertford family in Britain. Today it hangs in the Wallace Collection in London, along with other Rococo masterpieces such as Fragonard's "The Swing."

The little spaniel on the bench is thought to be her pet dog, Inès. Dogs have long been a symbol of loyalty, so it may stand for her lasting friendship with the king. Like the flowers and silk, the dog's soft fur shows off Boucher's skill.
