Story

This huge painting shows Whistlejacket, a chestnut racehorse, rearing up on his back legs at about life size. It is almost three meters tall. There is no rider and no landscape. The background is plain light brown. Because of that, his shiny coat, strong muscles and pale mane and tail come at us as if a real horse were standing there.

It was ordered by the Marquess of Rockingham, who later became Prime Minister of Britain twice. Whistlejacket was his famous horse. He won a race at York in 1759 and then retired. The painter Stubbs studied how horses' bodies work for years, and in 1766 he published "The Anatomy of the Horse." That research helped him paint the horse's muscles and sinews in convincing detail.

For a long time, the painting hung in the house of Rockingham's family. After 1782, a room there was decorated around it and became known as the "Whistlejacket Room." In 1997, the National Gallery in London bought it for 11 million pounds with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Today it is one of the museum's most popular paintings, hung so that you can see it from a long way off.
