A shoe goes flying! The Rococo classic that appears in a Disney film.
In a leafy garden, a woman in a pink dress swings high in the air. One of her shoes flies off! A young man hides in the bushes at the lower left and looks up. At the back on the right, an older man pulls the ropes to move the swing. The Cupid statue on the left holds a finger to his lips: "Shh, it's a secret." The painting is full of playful fun.
According to the memoirs of the 18th-century writer Charles Collé, a courtier ordered this painting. He first asked the painter Doyen for a picture of his sweetheart on a swing pushed by a bishop. Doyen said no, and the job went to Fragonard. Fragonard changed the bishop into an ordinary older man. It is a classic example of light, sweet Rococo art.
After the French Revolution, paintings for aristocrats like this seemed old-fashioned. Still, the British Marquess of Hertford bought it in the 19th century, and today it is a star of the Wallace Collection in London. In 2021, it was cleaned for the first time in over 100 years, and bright colors came back from under yellow varnish. It has been copied and parodied many times in films, ads and art.

In the 2013 film "Frozen," this painting appears when Anna sings "For the First Time in Forever" in the castle's painting gallery. Anna copies the pose of the woman on the swing. The makers of "Tangled" were also inspired by it.
The customer wanted a bishop to push the swing. The first painter, Doyen, refused the job. Fragonard took it and changed the bishop into an ordinary man. Even today, we do not know for sure who ordered the painting.
The Cupid statue on the left, with a finger on his lips, is based on a famous sculpture by Falconet called "Menacing Cupid." A version of the sculpture is in the Louvre, so you can compare the two.
In 2001, the British artist Yinka Shonibare made a life-size 3D version of this painting. The woman's dress is made of African-style printed fabric, and she has no head! It is a bold parody that makes us think about aristocrats and the French Revolution.
