香水の町として知られる南フランスのグラースに生まれました。ブーシェなどに学び、1752年にローマ賞を受けてイタリアで修業しました。ぶらんこに乗る女性を描いた『ぶらんこ』のように、軽やかで楽しい恋の場面を、すばやい筆さばきで描きました。しかしフランス革命のあと、こうした絵ははやらなくなり、晩年はあまり注目されませんでした。
Fragonard was born in Grasse, a perfume town in southern France. He studied with Boucher and others, and won the Prix de Rome in 1752, so he trained in Italy. He painted light, happy love scenes, like The Swing, with quick brushwork. But after the French Revolution, this style went out of fashion, and he was almost forgotten in his last years.
