Deep in a book, but there's another face under the paint!
A girl in a yellow dress leans back on a big cushion. She is completely lost in a small book. We see only her profile in this quiet moment. The French painter Fragonard painted it around 1769. It is now in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Fragonard was a painter of the Rococo, a bright and light style of 18th-century French art. This picture is close to his series of 'fantasy figures', and we do not know the model's name. He painted it with fast brushstrokes. The ruffles of the white collar are said to be scratched into wet paint with the end of the brush handle.
After the French Revolution, sweet Rococo paintings like Fragonard's went out of fashion, and he lost his popularity. But from the 19th century, people loved this picture again. In 1961, it was given to the National Gallery of Art. Today it is a favorite image of reading, seen on book covers and posters.

Scientific studies, including X-rays, showed another face under the profile. It was looking out at the viewer. Fragonard first painted a person facing us, then changed it to a girl lost in her book.

After the Revolution, Fragonard had few customers. With help from the painter David, he joined the group that prepared the new national museum, today's Louvre. He changed from a painter into a protector of great art.
