This is a famous racehorse. His name is Whistlejacket. He stands up on his back legs. The picture is very big, almost three meters tall! There is nothing behind the horse.

This huge painting shows Whistlejacket, a chestnut racehorse, rearing up on his back legs at about life size. It is almost three meters tall. There is no rider and no landscape. The background is plain light brown. Because of that, his shiny coat, strong muscles and pale mane and tail come at us as if a real horse were standing there.

🦉 Fun Fact! Many stories say it was unfinished. Maybe a portrait of King George III on the horse was planned, or a gift to the king was canceled. But shadows are painted under the back hooves, so the painting may have been finished with a plain background. We still cannot know for sure.
