Stubbs was born in Liverpool, England. He taught himself painting and anatomy, and studied the bones and muscles of horses with his own hands. This made his horse paintings accurate and full of life. His life-size horse, Whistlejacket, is his masterpiece. He also painted animals that were rare in Britain, such as a kangaroo, a zebra, a cheetah and a rhinoceros.
