Fast, fast brushwork! A smile from a London street.
A girl with a big, flat basket on her head is smiling brightly. She made her living by selling shrimps on the streets of London. Her name is unknown. The English painter William Hogarth painted her around 1740–1745. The picture is now in the National Gallery in London.
Hogarth was famous for paintings and prints that made fun of people's foolish ways in a series of scenes. This picture is completely different. With rapid, lively brushstrokes, he captured one girl's smile. Her face is full of life, but her clothes and basket are just rough strokes. This energy makes her look truly alive.
The picture was never sold and stayed in Hogarth's studio. After his death, his wife Jane is said to have shown it to visitors. She said something like, 'People say he could not paint skin. Look at this!' It later became popular as a print, and the National Gallery bought it in 1884.

The small white pot on the basket is said to be a measuring cup for shrimps. Sellers measured shrimps with it and sold them by the cup. It is a small clue about the lives of street sellers.
There is no record that Hogarth gave this picture a title. In 1782, after his death, the engraver Bartolozzi made a print of it called 'Shrimps!', like the girl's street cry. The title 'The Shrimp Girl' first appears in a sale catalogue of 1790.
Hogarth and other artists were troubled by people copying their prints. Thanks to their efforts, Britain passed a law in 1735 to protect engravers' rights. It is still called 'Hogarth's Act'.
Hogarth loved his pug dog and even painted it in his self-portrait. The dog's name was Trump. In the self-portrait at Tate Britain in London, the pug sits proudly next to the painter's picture.
