ロンドンに生まれました。ラテン語の先生だった父は、ラテン語で話すコーヒー店を開きましたが失敗し、一家は苦労します。銀細工の彫り師に弟子入りしたあと、絵を学びました。人々のおろかさを、連続した何枚もの場面で物語のように描く絵や版画で大人気になります。1753年には『美の分析』という本を書き、「美の線」とよぶS字の曲線について説きました。
Hogarth was born in London. His father, a Latin teacher, opened a coffee house where people spoke Latin, but it failed, and the family had hard times. Hogarth trained as an engraver of silver and then studied painting. He became very popular for paintings and prints that told stories about people's foolish ways in a series of scenes. In 1753 he wrote a book, The Analysis of Beauty, about the S-shaped 'line of beauty.'
