Thomas Gainsborough 1727–1788・Britain

A portrait master who was 'sick of portraits'

Gainsborough was born in Sudbury, Suffolk, in eastern England. His elegant portraits of rich people, painted with light, feathery brushstrokes, made him very popular. In 1768, he became a founding member of the Royal Academy. His great rival was Joshua Reynolds. But Gainsborough loved landscapes most, and he also loved music. The Blue Boy is his most famous work.

“I'm sick of Portraits and wish very much to take my Viol da Gamba and walk off to some sweet Village where I can paint Landskips…”

— Thomas Gainsborough, From a letter to his friend, the musician William Jackson(友人の音楽家ウィリアム・ジャクソンへの手紙より)
