A lion and an ox side by side! A preacher-painter made this scene more than 60 times.
A lion, an ox, a leopard, a bear, a wolf... Animals that would normally hunt or be hunted sit quietly together with little children. The American painter Edward Hicks made this picture around 1834. Today it is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
The picture comes from words in the Bible, in the Book of Isaiah: 'The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid... and a little child shall lead them.' Hicks was a Quaker minister. The Quakers are a Christian group that values peace. He earned his living by painting coaches and signs, and he taught himself to paint pictures. That is why his animals look simple and charming.
Hicks painted this 'Peaceable Kingdom' more than 60 times in his life. While he was alive, people knew him better as a preacher than as a painter. But in the 20th century, people began to value 'folk art,' made by artists without formal training. Hicks became known as one of the most famous American folk artists.

Hicks is said to have painted more than 60 versions of The Peaceable Kingdom, and they are now in museums across America. The animals, their positions and the backgrounds change a little each time. Some people say you can see his feelings change as you compare them.
The Book of Isaiah says, 'The lion shall eat straw like the ox.' Look closely and you can see straw by the ox's mouth. The lion is not eating it in the picture, but the straw next to it reminds us of this prophecy.
The group in the background on the left shows a famous legend: William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, making a peace treaty with the Lenape people. Hicks based it on an idealized painting by Benjamin West. He put peace between animals and peace between people in one picture.
In 1827, Hicks's Quaker community split into two groups over their beliefs. A leader of one side was his own cousin, Elias Hicks. His pictures of animals living together may carry a strong wish for a world without fighting.
