In 1832, Delacroix traveled to Morocco in North Africa with a French diplomatic group. On the way back, he stopped in Algiers, now the capital of Algeria. There, he was specially allowed to enter the women's rooms of a private home, and he made sketches. European men usually could not see such places. Back in Paris, he painted this large work from his sketches and memories.
