パリ近くのシャラントンに生まれました。はげしい動きとあざやかな色で、戦いや物語のドラマを描き、フランス・ロマン主義のリーダーになりました。1830年の七月革命を描いた『民衆を導く自由の女神』が代表作です。1832年にはモロッコを旅して、光と色に大きな刺激を受けました。長年つけた日記も、画家の考えを知る大切な記録です。
Delacroix was born in Charenton, near Paris. With strong movement and bright colors, he painted dramatic battles and stories, and became the leader of French Romanticism. His most famous work is Liberty Leading the People, about the July Revolution of 1830. In 1832, he traveled to Morocco, where the light and color inspired him deeply. His long-kept journal is also an important record of his ideas.
