Too revolutionary, so it was hidden away!? The 2024 restoration brought back its colours.
In July 1830, the people of Paris rose up against King Charles X. This was the July Revolution. In the center, a woman who stands for Liberty holds up the French tricolour flag and a gun, and leads people over a barricade. Around her are a man in a top hat, a boy with pistols and citizens of every kind.
Delacroix did not fight himself, but he wrote to his brother: if he had not fought for his country, at least he would paint for her. He combined real people with a goddess-like symbol of Liberty, and created a powerful design that moves forward through smoke and light. It was shown at the Salon of 1831.
The government bought the painting in 1831, but it was soon put into storage, and around 1839 it was handed back to the artist. It entered the Louvre in 1874. Today it is a symbol of France. It appeared on the old 100-franc banknote and on the cover of Coldplay's album Viva la Vida. In a 2023–24 restoration, yellow varnish was removed, and its bright colours came back.
A woman holds a big flag. She is Liberty. People in Paris are fighting for freedom. A boy with two guns runs next to her. In 2024, people cleaned this painting. Now the colors are bright again!
The state bought it in 1831 for 3,000 francs, but the plan to hang it in the king's throne room never happened. Around 1833–34 it was put into storage. Around 1839 it was handed to Delacroix, who kept it at his aunt and cousin's home. The idea that it was 'hidden in an attic for being too revolutionary' comes from a later writer.
In 1999, the painting was flown to Tokyo for an exhibition on a special Airbus Beluga plane. It was too big for a normal cargo plane, so it travelled upright in a climate-controlled container. The flight took about 20 hours.
The 2024 restoration showed that Liberty's dress was not all yellow. Delacroix painted it light grey and added golden yellow in different amounts. Old varnish had made the whole dress look yellow. A boot that had blended into the paving stones at the bottom left also became easier to see.
In 2013, while it was on show at the Louvre-Lens in northern France, a visitor wrote 'AE911' on it with a marker. A restorer removed the writing in less than two hours, without damaging the paint.
