A ship escapes toward the sunrise! And in the clouds, the shadow of a one-eyed giant...
A grand ship decorated in red and gold sails toward the shining sunrise. The man raising his arms on deck is Ulysses (Odysseus), a hero of Greek myth. On the hills at the upper left lies the huge, misty shadow of the giant Polyphemus. The British painter Turner painted this in 1829. It is in the National Gallery in London.
The story comes from the ancient Greek poem "The Odyssey". Ulysses and his men are trapped in a cave by Polyphemus, a giant with one eye. They defeat the giant with a clever trick and escape by ship. Here, Ulysses mocks the giant from the deck. Turner based the painting on oil sketches he made in Italy. With bold reds and golds, he turned the myth into a drama of light.
It was shown at the Royal Academy exhibition in 1829. The shapes are blurry, but the light and color of the sunrise alone tell us about the joy of victory. When Turner died in 1851, he left the works in his studio to the nation. This painting joined the National Gallery in 1856. It is one of the great works of Turner's mature years.
A big ship sails on the sea. The sun comes up. A hero stands on the ship. A giant with one eye lies on the mountain. Can you find him in the clouds?
One of the flags on the ship shows the Trojan Horse. Ulysses is the hero said to have planned the trick of hiding soldiers inside a wooden horse to take the city of Troy. The flag quietly tells us whose ship this is.
In the rising sun on the right, faint horses are painted. They are the horses of Apollo, the sun god, who pull the sun across the sky in Greek myth. They are thought to be partly modeled on the sculptures of the Parthenon in ancient Greece.
Near the front of the ship, sea nymphs called Nereids gather with stars on their foreheads, glowing softly. In fact, these nymphs do not appear in Homer's poem. Turner added them himself as his own original touch.
The critic John Ruskin, a great supporter of Turner, called this "the central picture in Turner's career". He wrote that if Turner's fame had to rest on a single work, he would choose this one. Among Turner's countless works, it was seen as truly special.
