Storyイングランドとスコットランドの境を流れるトゥイード川。そのほとりに残るノラム城の廃墟を、朝日の中に描いた絵です。描いたのはイギリスの風景画家J・M・W・ターナー。1845年ごろ、70歳近くになった晩年の作品で、今はロンドンのテート・ブリテンにあります。
This painting shows the ruins of Norham Castle on the River Tweed, near the border between England and Scotland, in the light of sunrise. The English landscape painter J. M. W. Turner made it around 1845, when he was nearly 70. Today it hangs in Tate Britain in London.
ターナーは22歳の1797年に初めてこの城を訪れ、翌年に出した水彩画が高く評価されました。その後も何度も描き、版画集『リベル・ストゥディオルム』にも入れています。この油彩は、その版画をもとに色で描き直した晩年のシリーズの一枚。城にも牛にも輪郭がほとんどなく、光と色だけで朝の空気を表しています。
Turner first visited Norham in 1797, at the age of 22. The next year, he showed a watercolour of the castle, and critics praised it. He painted it again and again, and he put it in his print series Liber Studiorum. This oil painting is one of a late group of works that turned those prints into color. The castle and the cow have almost no outlines. Light and color alone show the morning air.
ターナーは1851年に亡くなり、手もとに残した大量の作品を国に遺しました。この絵もその「ターナー遺贈」の一枚で、仕上げの途中の作品とも考えられています。けれど、形をとかして光そのものを描いたようなこの絵は、のちの印象派や抽象画を先取りしたものとして、今では彼の代表作のひとつに数えられています。
Turner died in 1851 and left a huge number of his works to the nation. This painting is part of that 'Turner Bequest,' and some experts think it may be unfinished. Even so, it seems to paint light itself, with all the shapes melting away. Today it is seen as one of his greatest works, because it looks ahead to Impressionism and even to abstract art.

Secrets1831年、旅の途中でノラム城の前を通ったターナーは、連れの人に「この城を描いたことが、自分の成功の始まりだった」と語ったと伝えられています。そのとき帽子をとって城にお辞儀をした、という話も残っています。
In 1831, Turner passed Norham Castle on a journey. He is said to have told a companion that painting this castle was the start of his success. There is also a story that he took off his hat and bowed to it.
ターナーはノラム城を生涯で何度も描き、素描や水彩、版画、そしてこの晩年の油彩など、たくさんの作品が残っています。若いころのくわしい水彩から晩年のこの油彩まで並べると、城の形がだんだんとけて、光に変わっていくのがわかります。
Turner painted Norham Castle many times, in drawings, watercolours, a print and this late oil. If you line them up, from the detailed early watercolours to this late oil, you can see the castle slowly melt away into light.
右下の川の中にある、小さな茶色い点。これは水を飲みに来た牛で、すぐ下には水に映った影もあります。ほとんど形のない絵の中で、はっきりした生き物はこの牛だけ。見つけると、ぼんやりした色が急に風景に見えてきます。
Look for the small brown spot in the river, lower right. It is a cow drinking water, and you can see its reflection under it. It is the only clear living thing in the picture. Once you find it, the soft colors suddenly turn into a landscape.
ターナーが国に遺した作品は、油彩がおよそ300点、水彩や素描などの紙の作品が約3万点ともいわれます。今では、イギリスの現代美術の有名な賞にも「ターナー賞」と彼の名前がつけられています。
Turner left the nation about 300 oil paintings and around 30,000 works on paper, such as watercolours and drawings. Today, a famous British prize for contemporary art is named after him: the Turner Prize.
