Did a 67-year-old painter have himself tied to a mast? A ship in a whirling storm!
Snow, waves and smoke swirl around, and a steamboat is tossed in the middle. You cannot even see where the sky ends and the sea begins. This is by J. M. W. Turner, England's 'painter of light'. He painted it in 1842, when he was about 67, and showed it at the Royal Academy in London.
Turner wanted to paint light, air and the power of nature, not just the shapes of things. He put on thick paint and scraped it with a knife to show the wild movement of the storm. The steamboat was still a new machine then, and here it stands against the power of nature.
When it was shown, one critic laughed at it as 'soapsuds and whitewash'. But the young critic John Ruskin praised it as one of the grandest statements of sea-motion, mist and light ever put on canvas. Later, people saw Turner as a pioneer of Impressionism and even abstract art.
This is a big storm at sea. Snow, wind and smoke go round and round. A small steamboat is in the middle. The painter said, 'I was in this storm!' He said sailors tied him to the mast for four hours.
The full title is: 'Snow Storm – Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth Making Signals in Shallow Water, and going by the Lead. The Author was in this Storm on the Night the Ariel left Harwich.' The title is almost a story!
Turner later told a friend that he asked sailors to tie him to the mast for four hours to watch the storm. But no record of this trip has been found, and many experts doubt the story.
When Turner heard the 'soapsuds and whitewash' comment, he is said to have replied: 'What would they have? I wonder what they think the sea's like? I wish they'd been in it.'
Turner left his works to the British nation in his will. There were about 300 oil paintings and about 30,000 sketches and watercolours. This is called the Turner Bequest, and this painting is part of it.
