1838年、かつての名戦艦テメレール号が、解体されるためにテムズ川を曳かれていきました。テメレール号は1805年のトラファルガーの海戦で活躍した、98門の大砲をもつ軍艦です。ターナーは、黒い煙をはく小さな蒸気船に引かれる、白く幽霊のような老戦艦を、燃えるような夕日とともに描きました。

In 1838, the once-great warship Temeraire was towed up the River Thames to be broken up. She was a 98-gun ship that had fought bravely at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Turner painted the old ship, pale like a ghost, pulled by a small black steam tug, under a blazing sunset.

左には、ゆっくり消えていく帆船の時代。右には、沈んでいく太陽。この絵は、ひとつの時代の終わりと、蒸気の新しい時代の始まりを表していると考えられています。ターナーは事実どおりではなく、たとえば実際にははずされていたマストや帆を描きこみ、船を美しく見せています。

On the left is the fading age of sailing ships. On the right, the sun goes down. The painting is seen as the end of one era and the start of a new age of steam. Turner did not paint the facts exactly. For example, he showed the masts and sails, which had actually been removed, to make the ship look beautiful.

ターナーはこの絵を「私のいとしい子」と呼び、高額で買いたいという申し出も断って、国に遺しました。2005年のBBCラジオの投票では「イギリスでいちばん好きな絵」に選ばれ、2020年からはターナーの自画像とともに20ポンド紙幣にも描かれています。映画『007 スカイフォール』にも登場しました。

Turner called this painting his 'darling'. He refused a large offer to buy it and left it to the nation. In a 2005 BBC Radio poll, it was voted Britain's favourite painting. Since 2020, it has appeared on the £20 note together with Turner's self-portrait. It also appears in the James Bond film Skyfall.
