A steam train charges out of the rain, and Turner even painted a hare running ahead of it!
Through rain and mist, a black steam train crosses a bridge and rushes toward us. The place is the Maidenhead Railway Bridge over the River Thames, west of London. On the left, you can see an older stone road bridge in the haze. Turner showed this painting at the Royal Academy in 1844, when he was 69.
At that time, railways were a new technology that was changing the world. Trains were much faster than horses and carriages, and their speed amazed people. Turner did not draw the machine in detail. He used thick paint, a palette knife and blurred shapes to show speed itself. He is said to be the first to make the railway the subject of a serious oil painting.
A magazine joked that people should look quickly before the train dashed out of the picture. His way of showing movement with light and colour is thought to have influenced the Impressionists, such as Monet. The bridge, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is still in use today, with trains running over it. It is one of the great works of Turner's later years.
It is a rainy day. A black train runs over a bridge. It comes toward us very fast. Everything looks soft in the rain. Turner also painted a small hare in front of the train. Today it is very hard to see!

At the lower right, Turner painted a hare running along the track ahead of the train. Studies show that he added it late. The thin paint has become transparent over time, so today it is almost invisible. It is read as a race between hare and train, or as a sign that nature is in danger.
There is a story, told by a woman on the same train, that Turner opened the window on a stormy night and put his head out for about nine minutes. No one knows if it is true.
Turner was known to own shares in the Great Western Railway. Some people at the time suspected he was advertising the power of steam. Railways were a popular investment at the time.
Around the train, there are tiny figures living the old way: a man ploughing a field and people in a boat. Next to the hare and the farmer, the machine looks even faster. One scholar links them to an old country dance called "Speed the Plough".
