Story

From the top of a mountain, we look down at a river that bends like an oxbow, the U-shaped collar of an ox yoke. On the left, there are dark storm clouds and broken trees. On the right, there are sunny skies and farms. Thomas Cole, the father of American landscape painting, painted this view from Mount Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1836.

At that time, Cole was working on a big series called The Course of Empire. His patron, Luman Reed, suggested that he first paint something for the spring exhibition of the National Academy of Design. Cole made this large landscape. It contrasts wild nature on the left with farmland on the right and makes us think about nature and settlement in America.

The painting was sold at the exhibition, and in 1908 it was given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cole became the starting point of the Hudson River School, a group of painters of America's grand nature. This painting is still one of the most famous works of American art.

This is a view from a mountain in America. The left side is dark and stormy. The right side is sunny. A river makes a big U shape. Can you find the painter? He is very small at the bottom!
