Cole was born in Bolton, in northwest England, and moved to America with his family as a teenager. He painted the grand nature of New York's Hudson River valley and the Catskill Mountains. He is called the father of the Hudson River School, America's first major landscape movement. Worried about nature being lost to development, he also painted The Course of Empire, five pictures showing a civilization rise and fall.
