Story

Maruyama Ōkyo, a painter in Kyoto, made this picture of puppies in 1781. Three puppies play on a bluish ground sprinkled with gold dust. The writing in the upper right says Ōkyo painted it in the eleventh month of the old Japanese calendar in 1781. It is a low, wide screen, only about 24.5 centimeters tall.

This kind of screen is called a furosaki screen. In a tea ceremony, it stands behind the kettle and brazier. Ōkyo believed in drawing from life. The soft fur, round bodies and tilted heads show that he watched real puppies very closely.

Ōkyo's cute puppies were very popular. He painted them many times, and students like Nagasawa Rosetsu painted them too. This screen was part of the collection of the American collector Mary Griggs Burke. It was given to the Minneapolis Institute of Art in 2015. Now people outside Japan can enjoy Ōkyo's puppies too.

Here are three little puppies. One is lying down. One is facing you. One is walking away. The painter watched real puppies very carefully. This small screen stood in a tea room!
