Here are three little puppies. One is lying down. One is facing you. One is walking away. The painter watched real puppies very carefully. This small screen stood in a tea room!

Maruyama Ōkyo, a painter in Kyoto, made this picture of puppies in 1781. Three puppies play on a bluish ground sprinkled with gold dust. The writing in the upper right says Ōkyo painted it in the eleventh month of the old Japanese calendar in 1781. It is a low, wide screen, only about 24.5 centimeters tall.

【本文の訳】1781年、京都の絵師・円山応挙が描いた子犬の絵です。金の粉をまいた青っぽい地面の上で、3匹の子犬が遊んでいます。右上には「天明辛丑仲冬写 応挙」と書かれ、1781年（天明元年）の旧暦11月に描いたことがわかります。高さ24.5センチほどの、低くて横長の屏風です。
