Foxes gather on New Year's Eve, with fire glowing by their heads!
It is a starry New Year's Eve. White foxes gather under a large tree. A small flame glows beside each fox, and more lines of fire are coming across the fields. This is from Utagawa Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published in 1857. The place is the Shōzoku Enoki, the 'Changing Tree,' in Ōji, north of Edo.
Legend has it that every New Year's Eve, foxes from all over the Kantō region gathered under this enoki tree. They put on formal clothes, then visited nearby Ōji Inari Shrine, known as the head of the Inari shrines in Kantō. Foxes are messengers of the Inari god. Hiroshige made the foxes and their mysterious lights stand out against the deep indigo night.
Most of the One Hundred Famous Views show real places, but this print shows the world of a legend, and it is very dreamlike. It is number 118 in the series, in the winter section. The real enoki tree was later cut down, but Shōzoku Inari Shrine now stands at the spot. Many prints were made from the same blocks, so this design is in museums worldwide.
It is the last night of the year. Many white foxes meet under a big tree. Each fox has a small fire by its head. They go to a shrine together. People still have a fox parade there!

People in nearby villages are said to have counted the foxfires on New Year's Eve to predict whether the next year's harvest would be good. The foxes' lights were not scary. They were lights that told of good fortune.
In Ōji, local people still hold the 'Ōji Fox Parade' on New Year's Eve. People with fox masks or makeup walk from Shōzoku Inari Shrine to Ōji Inari Shrine. The old legend in Hiroshige's print has become a town festival.
In the rakugo comic story 'The Fox of Ōji,' a fox turns into a woman to trick a man. But the man tricks the fox instead. He eats a feast at a restaurant and leaves the fox to pay. The Ōji restaurant in the story, Ōgiya, no longer serves meals, but it still sells its rolled omelets.
Count the foxes under the tree and on the left, and you will find more than 20. In the fields at the back right, a long line of foxfires is coming closer. Follow the small lights one by one, and you can see the foxes' long journey.
