A towering mountain is made of blue, brown and white rocks, fitted together like patchwork. On the left lies the calm Lake Ashi. At the foot of the mountain, a tiny feudal lord's procession moves along the steep road. This is from Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, Hōeidō edition. It shows Hakone, the 10th station from Edo.
Crossing the Hakone mountains was the hardest part of the Tōkaidō. The long, steep road was called 'Hakone Hachiri', or the eight ri of Hakone. Hakone also had a strict checkpoint where officials inspected travelers. To show how huge and steep the mountain was, Hiroshige made it much sharper than real life, with rocks in impossible colors.
The Hōeidō Tōkaidō series was a huge success, and Hiroshige became famous as a master of landscapes. Later he made many other series about the Tōkaidō. Many copies were printed from the same blocks, so this design is in collections around the world. The one you see belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art in the United States.
This is Hakone, a famous mountain area. The mountain is very big and very sharp. Its rocks are blue, brown and white. A blue lake is on the left. Small people walk on the hard mountain road.
The real Hakone mountains are not this jagged or colorful. Hiroshige cared more about the feeling of a hard mountain crossing than about what he really saw. He exaggerated both shape and color, and that is why the picture stays in our memory.
At the Hakone checkpoint, guns coming into Edo and women leaving Edo were checked very strictly. One reason is said to be to stop the wives of feudal lords from leaving Edo.
The song 'Hakone Hachiri' begins, 'The mountains of Hakone are the steepest in the land.' Taki Rentarō wrote its music in the Meiji era, and it has been sung in schools. Even after the Edo period, Hakone's mountain road was that famous for being hard.
The procession at the foot of the mountain is drawn as small as beans. Because the people are so tiny, we can feel how huge the mountain is. Using small figures as a measuring stick is a clever landscape trick.
