Story

This print shows a waterfall dropping from a high cliff in many lines, like a bamboo blind. It is from Hokusai's waterfall series 'A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces,' made around 1833. On the bridge in front, travelers stop and look up at the falls. This impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Ono Falls is about 30 meters high and is in today's Agematsu Town, Nagano Prefecture. It lies on the Nakasendō, also called the Kisokaidō, the mountain road linking Edo and Kyoto, and was a well-known sight to many travelers. It is counted among the 'Eight Views of Kiso.' Hokusai showed the rushing water with repeated straight lines.

Hokusai contrasts the size of nature with the smallness of the people looking up at it. The white lines of the falls and the red-brown cliffs and little hall create a bright rhythm. Today Ono Falls is still a favorite stop for people who follow the old Nakasendō road.
