Story

An old paper lantern has turned into the face of a woman with long hair. She is Oiwa, one of the most famous ghosts in Edo ghost stories. This print is from One Hundred Ghost Stories, a series of ghost prints Hokusai designed around 1830–32, when he was in his early seventies. This impression is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Oiwa is the heroine of Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan, a kabuki play by Tsuruya Nanboku that was first staged in 1825. Her husband, Iemon, treated her very cruelly, and she died. As a ghost, she appears to him again and again. On stage, one highlight is a trick called chōchin-nuke, in which her ghost comes out of a paper lantern.

Hokusai went one step further and turned the lantern itself into her face. Her eyes and mouth appear in the torn paper, and the thin ribs of the lantern run across her face like stripes. It is scary, but also a little funny, which is very Hokusai. Only five prints from the series are known today, and this Oiwa is one of the most famous.
