Tokyo Skytree in an Edo-period print!? A mysterious tall tower stands far to the left.
This landscape print shows Mitsumata, where the Sumida River in Edo split into three. On the near shore, two men have lifted a boat and lit a fire under it, sending up thick smoke. Boats come and go on the river, and a long bridge stretches across on the right. Utagawa Kuniyoshi made this print around 1831 as part of a series.
The fire under the boat is thought to be part of its upkeep: drying the bottom and killing shipworms and other creatures that bore into the wood. In this series, Kuniyoshi used ideas from Western prints, like shaded clouds and a deep view into the distance. He was famous for warrior prints, and here he tried a new kind of landscape.
In 2011, people noticed that the thin tower on the left looked just like Tokyo Skytree, which opened the next year. Of course, it was not a prophecy. The shorter tower is thought to be a fire lookout, and the taller one a tower for digging a well. Many copies were printed, so museums like the Met own this design. We do not know who owns the copy in this image.
This is a river in old Tokyo, called Edo. Two men make a fire under a boat. Look far to the left. You can see a very tall, thin tower. It looks like Tokyo Skytree! But it was probably a tower for digging a well.
The most popular idea is that the tall tower was a temporary frame for digging a well. It was taken down after use, which explains why other pictures do not show it. But it is drawn much taller than real ones, so some mystery remains.
The shorter tower next to it has a lookout on top, so it is thought to be a fire lookout tower. An old map of Fukagawa from around 1850 is said to show a fire tower in that area.
Skytree stands in Sumida Ward, but the tower in the print seems to be in today's Koto Ward. The direction and place do not match. Still, 'Skytree in Edo' became a fun topic for print fans.
Kuniyoshi is known to have collected and studied Western prints. Some of his works are thought to borrow their layout directly from them. The shaded, solid-looking clouds and the low horizon here also show Western influence.
