迷路よーく見ると…顔が全部、人でできている！国芳のびっくり寄せ絵。Look closely… the whole face is made of people! Kuniyoshi's amazing puzzle portrait.

この作品のお話
Storyぎょろっとした目の、こわそうな男の顔。ところがよく見ると、おでこも鼻もほっぺも、ぜんぶ人の体を組み合わせてできています。差し出した手まで、人が寝そべってできた形です。歌川国芳が1847年ごろに出した、「寄せ絵（よせえ）」とよばれるだまし絵の浮世絵です。
A man with big, staring eyes looks a little scary. But look closely. His forehead, nose and cheeks are all made of human bodies. Even his hand is made of people lying down. Utagawa Kuniyoshi published this trick picture, called a yose-e, around 1847.
左上の文章には、だいたい次のようなことが書かれています。「大ぜいの人が寄ってたかって、とうとういい人をこしらえた。とかく人のことは、人にしてもらわないといい人にはならない」。たくさんの人が集まって一人の「いい人」ができた、というしゃれです。題名の「見かけはこわいがとんだいい人だ」も、この顔とかけています。
The text at the top left roughly says: 'Many people gathered together and finally made a good person. After all, you cannot become a good person without the help of others.' It is a joke: many people come together to make one 'good person'. The title, 'He looks fierce, but he's really a nice person', also plays with this face.
国芳は、ネコや金魚を人のように描いたり、文字を体で表したりと、遊び心たっぷりの絵を次々に作りました。この寄せ絵も人気が出て、同じ時期に似たシリーズが作られています。浮世絵は何枚も摺られたので、この図柄も各地の美術館にあります（画像の一枚の所蔵先はわかっていません）。
Kuniyoshi made many playful pictures, like cats and goldfish acting like people, and letters made of bodies. This puzzle picture was popular, and he made similar prints around the same time. Many copies were printed, so museums in many places own this design. We do not know who owns the copy in this image.
この男の人の顔を見てください。大きな目と大きな鼻をしています。でも、もう一度見てください！顔はたくさんの小さな人でできています。手も人でできています。画家はおもしろい絵を作るのが好きでした。
Look at this man's face. He has big eyes and a big nose. But look again! His face is made of many small people. His hand is made of people, too. The artist liked to make funny pictures.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secrets16世紀のイタリアの画家アルチンボルドは、果物や野菜を組み合わせて人の顔を描きました。国芳が彼の絵を知っていたという証拠はありませんが、遠くはなれた国で、同じように「部分を集めて顔を作る」アイデアが生まれたのはおもしろいですね。
In the 16th century, the Italian painter Arcimboldo made faces out of fruit and vegetables. There is no proof that Kuniyoshi knew his work. But it is interesting that both artists, far apart, had the same idea of building a face from parts.
耳のあたりをよく見ると、小さな男がほおづえをついて、こちらを見ています。そのとなりでは、別の人が頭のしま模様の布を引っぱっています。顔のパーツ一つ一つが、だれかの体なのです。何人で一つの顔ができているか、数えてみましょう。
Look near the ear. A small man rests his chin on his hands and looks at us. Next to him, another person pulls the striped cloth on the head. Every part of the face is somebody's body. Try counting how many people make one face.
国芳は同じころ、「人かたまつて人になる」という、人が集まって一人の顔になる寄せ絵も出しています。こちらも題名からして、だじゃれと遊び心でいっぱい。見る人を二度びっくりさせるシリーズでした。
Around the same time, Kuniyoshi also made 'People Gather to Make a Person', another face built from many people. Even the titles were full of word games and fun.
国芳の時代、幕府の「天保の改革」で、ぜいたくな浮世絵や役者絵がきびしく取りしまられました。国芳はそんな中でも、だまし絵や動物の絵など、しゃれのきいた作品で人々を楽しませ続けました。
In Kuniyoshi's time, the government's Tenpō Reforms strictly limited fancy prints and pictures of actors. Even so, Kuniyoshi kept people laughing with clever trick pictures and animal pictures.

ほおづえをついた小さな男が、ちょうど耳の形になっています。すずしい顔でこちらを見ているのがおかしいですね。

大きな鼻やほっぺのふくらみは、人の背中やおしりの丸みを利用しています。

前に差し出した手も、寝そべった人が指の形をつくっています。
The hand reaching forward is also made of people lying down to form the fingers.
4しゃれの文章The joke text
「大ぜいの人がよってたかって、いい人をこしらえた」という、絵の種明かしになっている文です。
