A giant wave is about to swallow small boats, with tiny Mount Fuji beyond. Katsushika Hokusai's The Great Wave off Kanagawa is one of the best-known works of Japanese art in the world. Until he died at 88 (90 by traditional Japanese counting), Hokusai drew everything: actors, beauties, landscapes, ghosts, book illustrations and drawing manuals. He is said to have made more than 30,000 works.
He used about 30 different artist names and is said to have moved house 93 times. He called himself 'the old man mad about painting' and wrote that past 100, even a single dot would come alive. His passion crossed the oceans and inspired Monet, Van Gogh and even the composer Debussy. Today his wave is on the 1,000-yen note. Let's join Hokusai's great adventure!
