This print looks down on Lake Suwa in Shinano Province, now Nagano Prefecture, from high ground. Two pines and a small shrine stand on a hill in front, and a tiny Mount Fuji can be seen far across the lake. On clear days, Fuji could be seen from around Lake Suwa. This print is from Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,' and this impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Most of the picture is made with shades of indigo, giving it a fresh, quiet mood. Two pines spread in a V shape and divide the picture. Under them stands a small shrine to the goddess Benzaiten. Its triangular roof is said to echo the shape of distant Fuji, showing how carefully Hokusai planned the composition. A small boat on the lake makes the scene feel even quieter.
The castle on the left shore is thought to be Takashima Castle, which used the lake as a moat. It seemed to float on the water, so it was called 'the floating castle of Suwa.' Today its main tower has been rebuilt, and the grounds are a park. This view lets us see the lake, the castle and Fuji all at once. Hokusai was in his seventies then. He boldly reshaped this famous view, using his imagination as well.
This is a big lake in the mountains. Two pine trees stand on a hill. A small shrine is under them. Can you find Mount Fuji? It is very small and far away.

When Lake Suwa freezes over in deep winter, the ice sometimes pushes up into a ridge across the lake. This is called 'omiwatari,' and it has long been said to be the path left by a god of Suwa Taisha shrine crossing the lake.
Local shrine records of whether omiwatari appeared go back to the mid-15th century. These long records are also used to study climate change. In recent years, the lake has often failed to freeze, so omiwatari has not appeared.
Lake Suwa is the starting point of the Tenryū River, which flows all the way to the Pacific Ocean in Shizuoka. Water leaving the lake travels a long way to the sea. The lake Hokusai depicted is linked to the faraway ocean.
Utagawa Hiroshige also drew Lake Suwa in his late Fuji series, 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.' How did two masters show Fuji from the same lake? Comparing them reveals each artist's style.
