This print is from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji. The summit is sunny under a blue sky. But the foot of the mountain is dark, and red lightning flashes there. 'Hakuu' in the title means a sudden shower. The weather is completely different at the top and the bottom. This shows how tall Fuji is.
Hokusai painted the same Mount Fuji from many places, seasons and kinds of weather. In this print, there are no people and no boats. There is only the shape of the mountain and the weather. Puffy summer clouds, dotted slopes and red lightning on a black base. With just these, we can feel the heavy summer air and hear the storm.
Its design is very similar to 'South Wind, Clear Sky', or Red Fuji. So people also call it 'Black Fuji'. Red Fuji, Black Fuji and The Great Wave are among the best-known prints in the series. Because prints are made many times from the same woodblocks, museums around the world have this design. The image here is an Edo-period print that the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York acquired in 1936.
This is Mount Fuji again. The top is in the sunny sky. But the bottom is dark. Red lightning is there! A storm is under the mountain top. Fuji is so tall!
'South Wind, Clear Sky' and 'Rainstorm Beneath the Summit' show Fuji in a very similar shape and place. Red Fuji in fine weather, Black Fuji in a storm. Side by side, they show two faces of the same mountain.
The title means 'a sudden shower below the mountain,' but not a single line of rain is drawn. Hokusai makes us imagine the heavy rain and thunder with only the dark foot of the mountain and the red lightning. It is a bold way of showing something without drawing it.
Summer storm clouds often form around the middle of the mountain. The summit can be sunny above them. Hokusai showed this with a bold design that splits the weather into top and bottom.
After Thirty-six Views became a hit, Hokusai published series on waterfalls, bridges, and flowers and birds. He became a master of landscape prints after the age of 70. A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces is from this time too.
