Her long neck is made of plates!? Hokusai's ghost of Okiku.
A ghost of a woman with long hair rises quietly from an old well. This print is from 'One Hundred Ghost Stories,' a series of ghost prints Hokusai made in his early seventies. It shows Okiku from 'Sarayashiki,' or 'The Mansion of Plates,' a popular ghost story in Edo. Impressions of this design are in museums around the world, but we do not know where this particular impression is kept.
There are several versions of the Sarayashiki story. In a well-known one, a young servant named Okiku is blamed for losing one plate from a precious set of ten, and she dies in a well. At night, a voice is heard from the well counting, 'One plate, two plates…' Hokusai turned this story into a strange and beautiful design rather than a frightening one.
Okiku's neck is made of stacked plates, and it winds out of the well like a snake. The thin stream from her mouth looks like a sigh. The dark blue night sky and her white face make a strong contrast. Hokusai shows the ghost not just as scary but as a character with humor. This print is full of his imagination.
This is a ghost from an old story. She comes out of a well. Look at her long neck. It is made of plates! In the story, she counts plates at night.
Look closely at her long neck. It is made of many blue-patterned plates linked together. She is a ghost who counts plates, so her body is made of plates too. Turning the story itself into a shape is Hokusai's playful idea.
Sarayashiki is also a rakugo comic story. Crowds come to hear Okiku count, and one night she counts all the way to eighteen. When asked why, she says, 'I'm taking tomorrow off, so I counted two days' worth.' In this version, a ghost story becomes a joke.
Some versions of Sarayashiki are set in Banchō in Edo, and others in Himeji, in today's Hyōgo Prefecture. At Himeji Castle, a World Heritage Site, there is still a well called 'Okiku's Well,' and visitors come to see it. Of course, the name comes from the legend.
In the Edo period, ghost plays were often staged in summer theaters. In the summer of 1825, the play 'Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan' opened and became a big hit. Hokusai's 'One Hundred Ghost Stories' was born during this ghost boom.
