この作品のお話
Story北斎の「百物語」というおばけのシリーズの1枚です。夜、蚊帳（かや）の上から、骨ばかりになった小平二の幽霊が、うらめしそうに中をのぞきこんでいます。赤い縁の蚊帳をつかむ骨の指、ぎょろりとした目。暗い緑の背景が、不気味な夜の空気をつくっています。
This print is from Hokusai's ghost series, One Hundred Ghost Stories. At night, the ghost of Koheiji, now only bones, peeks over a mosquito net. Bony fingers grip the net's red edge, and his eyes stare. The dark green background makes the night feel creepy.
小平二は、江戸時代の小説や芝居に登場する旅役者です。幽霊の役が得意だった小平二は、悪い者たちに命をうばわれ、本物の幽霊になってもどってくる、というお話です。北斎は、そのお話の一場面を、ガイコツの細かい骨の形まで描きこんで、ぞっとするほどリアルに表しました。
Koheiji appears in Edo-period novels and plays. He was a traveling actor who was good at playing ghosts. In the story, bad people take his life, and he comes back as a real ghost. Hokusai showed one scene from that story. He drew every small bone of the skeleton, so it looks horribly real.
「百物語」と題されていますが、今知られているのはわずか5図だけです。お岩さんや皿屋敷のお菊など、有名な怪談が選ばれています。数は少ないものの、北斎のユーモアと想像力が光るシリーズとして人気があり、同じ図柄の摺りは世界のいくつもの美術館に残っています。
It is called One Hundred Ghost Stories, but only five prints are known today. They show famous ghost tales, like Oiwa and Okiku of the Plate Mansion. There are only a few, but the series is loved for Hokusai's humor and imagination. Impressions of this design are in several museums around the world.

えっ！？な裏ネタ
Secretsシリーズ名は「百物語」ですが、確認されているのは5図だけ。もっと出す予定だったのか、5図で終わったのかはわかっていません。それでも5図はどれも個性的で、北斎の怪談絵の代表作として、世界中で愛されています。
The series is called One Hundred Ghost Stories, but only five prints are known. We don't know if more were planned or if it stopped at five. Still, all five are unique, and they are loved around the world as Hokusai's best ghost prints.
百物語は、夜に人が集まり、灯をともして怪談を一つ話すごとに一つ消していく遊び。100話目で最後の灯が消えると、本物のおばけが出ると言われました。北斎のこのシリーズの名前も、この遊びから取られています。
Hyaku monogatari was a night game. People lit many lights and told ghost stories. After each story, they put out one light. It was said that when the last light went out after the 100th story, a real ghost would appear. Hokusai's series is named after this game.
ほお骨や歯、指の骨まで、細かく描き分けられています。北斎は生き物の形をよく観察した絵師で、そのこだわりがおばけの絵にも表れています。こわい絵なのに、どこかユーモラスなところも北斎らしさです。
The cheekbones, teeth and finger bones are all drawn in detail. Hokusai studied the shapes of living things closely, and it shows even in his ghost pictures. It is scary, yet a little funny too. That is very Hokusai.
小平二は、幽霊を演じるのがうまい役者だったという設定です。「おばけの名人が本物のおばけになる」という皮肉なお話が、江戸の人々を夢中にさせました。このお話は、江戸時代の小説や歌舞伎で何度も取り上げられました。
In the story, Koheiji was an actor who was great at playing ghosts. A ghost expert turning into a real ghost: this twist thrilled people in Edo. This story appeared many times in Edo-period novels and kabuki.
