This print from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji shows a place near Ejiri, a post town on the Tōkaidō road. Today it is part of Shizuoka City. Travelers walk on a path through rice fields. Suddenly a strong wind hits them. The trees bend, white papers fly from a woman's kimono, and a hat flies into the sky. This impression is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
You cannot see wind. Hokusai showed its power with bending trees, papers and leaves in the air, and people bending low and holding their hats. Mount Fuji, on the other hand, is just a single outline. The contrast between the busy people and the calm mountain makes this print fun.
This print inspired modern artists too. In 1993, the Canadian photographer Jeff Wall made a large work called 'A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai)'. He combined many photos to recreate the moment when papers fly. It belongs to Tate in London.
Whoosh! A strong wind is blowing. White papers fly into the sky. A man's hat flies away too. Can you find Mount Fuji? It is just one thin line! The wind is the star of this picture.
Here, Fuji is drawn with one thin line and no color. It is the star of the series, yet it almost disappears. Hokusai made the wind the star instead. The contrast between moving people and the still mountain makes the wind feel even stronger.
Jeff Wall's 'A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai)' used actors and many photos taken over a long time. He combined them digitally. He rebuilt Hokusai's moment as a photograph.
The papers flying from the woman's kimono are kaishi. People carried these papers in their kimono for notes or as tissues. Each sheet faces a different way as it dances in the wind. Hokusai showed the force of the wind with flying paper.
Late in life, Hokusai called himself 'Gakyō Rōjin Manji', meaning 'old man mad about painting'. True to the name, he kept painting until almost 90. 'Manji' was a name Hokusai liked to use in his last years.
