This print from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji is known as 'Red Fuji'. Rows of small clouds float in a blue sky. A red Mount Fuji fills the picture. There are no people and no houses. This impression is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prints of the same design are in museums around the world.
'Gaifū' means a gentle south wind in early summer. 'Kaisei' means a clear sky. On some mornings in late summer and early autumn, the rising sun makes Fuji look red. People still call this 'red Fuji'. Hokusai used only a few colors. With gradation printing, the color changes from the foot of the mountain to the top.
The series was a big hit. Although it was called 'Thirty-six Views', ten more prints were added later, for a total of 46. The simple shapes and bold colors later influenced posters and design. Since 2020, pictures from this series have appeared on the pages of Japanese passports.
This is Mount Fuji. But it is red! In the morning, the sun sometimes makes the mountain red. The sky is blue with many little clouds. There are no people in this picture. It shows the mountain, the sky and a forest.
Because the series was so popular, ten prints were added later. That made 46 in all. The extra ten are called 'Ura Fuji'. The first 36 have blue outlines, but the extra ten have black ink outlines.
Japanese passports issued since 2020 have pictures from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji on their visa pages. Every trip abroad, you travel with Hokusai. Each two-page spread uses a different design, so a new view appears as you turn the pages.
In the afterword of 'One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji', Hokusai wrote that at 73 he finally began to understand the shapes of living things. He hoped to reach a divine level at 100, and that at 110 every dot and line would come alive.
Red Fuji is not just imagination. On some mornings in late summer and early autumn, the sunrise turns the mountain red. It needs the right weather, so seeing it is thought to bring good luck. Hokusai's Red Fuji captures that moment with big shapes and color.
