Three travelers measure a giant tree!? A trunk that steals the show from Fuji.
A gigantic tree trunk stands in the middle of the picture, with Mount Fuji rising behind it. Travelers stretch out their arms to measure how thick the trunk is. This print is from Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,' made around 1830–32. This impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
'Mishima-goe' was the road from Kai Province, now Yamanashi, over the foot of Mount Fuji to Mishima in Suruga Province. This view may be from around Kagosaka Pass, on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka. However, some, such as the British Museum, say it is hard to pin down the exact place.
The giant tree is so big that it seems to split the view, and distant Fuji looks small by comparison. Hokusai often surprised viewers by pairing a large object in front with Fuji far away. The puffy clouds around Fuji are also designed almost like a pattern. The contrast between great nature and small people is what makes this print fun.
A very big tree stands in the middle. Mount Fuji is behind it. Three travelers hold hands around the tree. They want to know how big it is!
Even with three people joining hands, they do not seem to reach all the way around the trunk. Three adults with arms spread make about five meters. Hokusai drew a tree even bigger than that.
The Metropolitan Museum explains that the travelers hug the trunk out of joy at reaching the ancient tree. The travelers look like children playing in the presence of great nature, suggesting Hokusai's warm view of ordinary travelers.
The character 嶌 in the title is an old way of writing 島, 'island.' It refers to Mishima, now Mishima City in Shizuoka. Edo-period print titles often use kanji that look different from today's, and the same place name can be written in several ways.
The British Museum describes this giant tree as a huge cedar. Japanese cedar grows naturally only in Japan, and there are giant cedars over a thousand years old in many places. The Jōmon Sugi on Yakushima Island in Kagoshima is one of them.
