Fingers? Tree roots? Hokusai's waterfall looks alive.

This print is from Hokusai's series of eight pictures, A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces. It shows Kirifuri Falls in Nikkō, in Shimotsuke Province, now Tochigi. Many streams of water split and fall over the rocks. This impression is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
After the success of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, Hokusai made this waterfall series in his seventies. Water has no fixed shape, so it is hard to draw. Hokusai split the streams into bands of deep blue and white, almost like a pattern. At the bottom, travelers look up at the falls. At the upper right, people climb a mountain path. They show how huge the waterfall is.
Kirifuri Falls is still a famous sight in Nikkō. You can see the water fall in two steps. The name 'Kirifuri', or 'falling mist', is said to come from its spray that falls like mist. The publisher was Nishimuraya Yohachi, the same as for Thirty-six Views. Hokusai also made a series about famous bridges after this.
This is a big waterfall in Nikkō. The water falls in many lines. It looks like big fingers! Some small people look up at it. You can still visit this waterfall today.
A Tour of Waterfalls has eight prints. Every waterfall has a different shape: some fall straight, others spread out in curves. The series is like a sample book of Hokusai's skill in drawing water. All eight are tall pictures that suit the height of waterfalls.
The branching streams look like fingers or tree roots. Hokusai did not paint water as a background. He painted it like a living, moving creature. Each stream has a dark blue outline, which gives the water weight and power.
Kirifuri Falls is in Nikkō National Park, and you can still see it from a viewing deck. If you compare it with the print, you see how boldly Hokusai changed the shapes. Comparing the print with the real falls is part of the fun of a trip.
Before he died at 90, Hokusai is said to have said, 'If heaven gave me five more years, I could become a real painter.' Even after all these masterpieces, he was not satisfied.
