A tiny Mount Fuji under a bridge! Hokusai's picture-frame magic.
This is one of Katsushika Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji'. It shows Mannen Bridge in Fukagawa, Edo, over the Onagi River where it flows into the Sumida, as if we are looking up from below. People cross the high, arched bridge, and under the arch, far away, is a small white Mount Fuji. Boats float on the river, and a man fishes at the bottom right. This impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Hokusai was over 70 when this series came out. He had studied Western perspective since he was young. Here, the big bridge in front and the tiny Fuji far away make the space feel very deep. The arch of the bridge works like a picture frame around Mount Fuji. The bridge was built high so that boats could pass under it.
Fukagawa is the town where the haiku poet Matsuo Bashō built his hut, and Bashō's hut stood near Mannen Bridge. About 25 years after this print, Utagawa Hiroshige also drew Mannen Bridge in 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo', boldly showing Mount Fuji beyond a hanging turtle. A bridge called Mannen Bridge still stands in the same place today.
A big bridge goes over a river. People walk on the bridge. Under the bridge, you can see a small Mount Fuji. Boats float on the water. A man is fishing at the bottom right.
The big bridge seems to be the star. But look under the arch, and there is a tiny Mount Fuji. Using something large in front as a frame for something small far away was one of Hokusai's favorite tricks. Even though Fuji is small, our eyes are pulled toward it.
About 25 years later, Hiroshige drew the same bridge with a large turtle hanging from the handle of a bucket in front. It is said to be a pun on 'Mannen', which means 'ten thousand years', as in the saying that turtles live ten thousand years. Turtles were sold there so people could set them free as a good deed.
Matsuo Bashō's home, the Bashō Hut, was in Fukagawa, where Mannen Bridge stands. His famous haiku about a frog jumping into an old pond is said to have been written at this hut. Today there are Bashō sites and a memorial museum near the bridge.
The wooden arched bridge that Hokusai drew is gone, but a bridge called Mannen Bridge still crosses the river in the same place, now as a steel arch. From the bridge, looking toward the Sumida River, you can imagine Edo's waterside in Hokusai's time.
