This print shows a large waterfall dropping straight down from a cliff. It is from Hokusai's waterfall series 'A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces,' made around 1832. The top of the falls is designed as a round shape, as if seen from above, and the flowing water is shown with swirling patterns. This impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Amida Falls is about 60 meters high and is in today's Gujō City, Gifu Prefecture. The title says 'deep in the Kiso Road,' but the falls is actually away from that road, in the mountains near the source of the Nagara River. It has long been known as a place of training for people who worship Mount Haku.
On the cliff to the left, three men spread a mat, make a small fire and relax together. They seem to be warming something in a hanging pot. Hokusai painted not only the power of nature but also the people who enjoy it. The Amida Falls is still a popular place to visit, and in summer many people come to enjoy the cool air.
This is a big waterfall. Look at the top. It is round like a ball! Hokusai drew the top as if it were seen from above. Three men have a picnic on the cliff.
The top of the falls is round, as if seen from above, while the falling water is seen from the side. Hokusai boldly combined two viewpoints in one picture. The round part may be a design of the stream flowing into the falls.
According to legend, a monk named Dōga from Nagataki-dera temple trained in a cave beside the falls and burned a sacred fire. The figure of Amida Buddha is said to have appeared, and so the falls came to be called the Amida Falls.
The men on the left hang a pot from three sticks and seem to be warming something over a fire. They are having a calm picnic on a steep cliff where one wrong step could be dangerous. Funny, relaxed people like these often appear in Hokusai's prints.
The Amida Falls is one of 'Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls,' chosen in 1990. That was about 160 years after Hokusai made this print. A famous place in an Edo print was officially praised again in modern times.
