A narrow, deep valley path runs between steep mountains. A stream flows beside the road, and people carrying firewood come and go. In the back, one tree has turned red. This is from Utagawa Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hōeidō edition). It shows the Utsunoya Pass between Mariko and Okabe, the 21st post town from Edo.
The Utsunoya Pass was known as a dark mountain road, even in the daytime. Hiroshige covered both sides with green mountains and drew a thin path and a blue stream through the middle. He showed the grass and trees with many small dots. The people carrying firewood are not travelers but local villagers, so we also see the daily life of people living on the pass.
This pass has been famous in poetry since the Heian period. It even appears in The Tales of Ise. In the Meiji era, tunnels were dug, and crossing the pass became much easier. Many prints were made from the same blocks, so this design is in museums worldwide. This one belongs to the San Diego Museum of Art.
This is a road in a deep valley. The mountains are green. A small blue river runs by the road. People carry wood on their backs. A very old poem tells about this road.

In The Tales of Ise, the hero reaches a dark, narrow road on Mount Utsu. Thinking of someone he loves in the capital, he writes a poem: he cannot meet that person, either awake or in dreams. Travelers in Hiroshige's time who knew the tale may have recalled the poem while crossing the pass.
At first, the Hōeidō Tōkaidō series was published together with Tsuruya Kiemon, an old publisher whose shop name was Senkakudō. The 'Senkakudō' seal under the signature on this print is thought to come from that early period.
In 1876, a tunnel opened under the pass. It was built by private business and charged a fee, and it is said to be Japan's first toll tunnel. It was later rebuilt in brick. People can still walk through it, and it is a registered cultural property.
Utsunoya has a charm called tōdango, ten tiny dumplings tied on a string. It comes from a legend that Jizō Bodhisattva defeated a demon who attacked travelers. People still buy it today to keep bad luck away.
