Snow falls softly at night. But the real Kambara hardly ever gets snow!?

This print from the Hōeidō Tōkaidō series shows a snowy night at Kambara, the 15th post town. Today it is in Shizuoka City. Mountains, houses and roofs are all covered with snow, and more snow is still falling. Travelers in straw hats walk with their heads down on a snowy slope. This impression is in the Library of Congress. Prints of the same design are in museums around the world.
This print uses only a few colors. It relies mainly on dark and light ink to show the snowy night. The sky is dark at the top and gets lighter below. This gradation gives depth to the night air. The white snow is just the color of the paper. The printer left those parts without ink, so the snow looks soft.
Kambara faces Suruga Bay and is a warm place. Even today, snow rarely piles up there. Nobody knows why Hiroshige showed it in heavy snow. Many think he imagined the scene. Still, this quiet snowy night is loved as one of the best prints in the Tōkaidō series.
It is a quiet night. Snow is falling. The houses and hills are white. Three people are walking in the snow. But the real Kambara is a warm town. It almost never snows there! Hiroshige probably imagined this snowy scene.
Kambara is on the warm coast of Shizuoka, and heavy snow is very rare. Experts think Hiroshige's snow scene came from his imagination. 'Why snow in Kambara?' is a classic question among print fans. In a series that shows all four seasons, this is an important winter scene.
The white snow is not white paint. It is the bare paper. The carver cut away those parts of the block, so nothing was printed there, and the paper's white became snow. Leaving the white just right needed a skilled carver.
The round red seal at the lower left says 'Takenouchi'. That is the name of the owner of the publisher Hōeidō. Ukiyo-e prints show the publisher's name, not only the artist's. A publisher chose the artist, hired the carver and printer, and sold the prints, much like a publishing company today.
Until his mid-thirties, Hiroshige was not very well known. The Tōkaidō series made him a star. He became a leading landscape artist, as popular as Hokusai. After that, Hiroshige made several more Tōkaidō series in his life.
