Story

This print from the Hōeidō Tōkaidō series shows a place near Shōno, the 45th post town. Today it is in Suzuka, Mie. A sudden shower surprises travelers on a slope. Men carrying a palanquin run up the hill. A man with an umbrella bends forward and runs down. This impression is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

The rain is shown with thin, slanting lines. The carver cut each line into the woodblock one by one. The bamboo behind is printed in three shades of gray, in three separate steps. The farther away it is, the more it fades in the rain. The bamboo bends and people run. It is a still print, yet we can almost hear the rain and wind.

The subtitle 'hakuu' means a sudden shower from a bright sky. Along with 'Night Snow at Kambara', this is one of the most popular prints in the series. Hiroshige later painted rain again in 'Sudden Shower over Shin-Ōhashi Bridge and Atake' in One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, and Van Gogh copied that print in oil paint. This Shōno print is an early example of Hiroshige's famous rain scenes.

Oh no, it is raining hard! The men run up and down the hill. The bamboo trees bend in the wind. Look at the umbrella. It has a name on it. It is the name of the print shop. It is an ad!
