From a mountain pass—a huge Fuji in three colors!
A huge Mount Fuji opens up beyond a steep slope. The place is Inume Pass in Kai Province, now Uenohara City in Yamanashi Prefecture. It was a pass on the Kōshū Kaidō, the road between Edo and Kōfu, and was known for its fine view of Fuji. This print is from Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.' This impression is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Fuji is printed in three colors: white near the top, indigo in the middle and brown at the foot. They show how the mountain looks different at each height—snow, forest and rock, and earth. Thin clouds float at its base, and tiny travelers and horses move on the green slope in front. Drawing the people small makes the view feel even grander.
After 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' became popular, landscape prints featuring Fuji grew even more popular. The series influenced later artists such as Utagawa Hiroshige. Hiroshige later depicted Inume Pass too. Comparing their prints of the same place is one of the pleasures of ukiyo-e.
This is a road on a mountain. Mount Fuji is very big. It has three colors: white, blue and brown. Small people and horses walk on the road. Two people climb a steep hill.

Utagawa Hiroshige made two Fuji series, one around 1852 and one in 1858, and both include Inume Pass in Kai. We can compare how Hokusai and Hiroshige depicted the same place.
The series was published by Nishimuraya Yohachi, a publisher in Edo. From Hokusai's drawing, a carver cut the woodblocks, and a printer layered the colors. Ukiyo-e prints were made by teamwork among the publisher, artist, carver and printer.
Fuji seen from the Shizuoka side is sometimes called the 'front Fuji,' and from the Yamanashi side the 'back Fuji.' Hokusai's series even has a print titled 'Back View of Fuji from the Minobu River.' Of course, Fuji is Fuji from any side.
There is a theory that the Kōshū Kaidō, which passes through Inume Pass, was meant as an escape route for the shogun from Edo to Kōfu in an emergency. Kōfu was an important place ruled directly by the shogunate. However, there is no clear proof.
