Story

A huge black carp streamer swims in the wind and fills the whole picture. Behind it, we see a town full of banners, with a few small carp streamers, and Mount Fuji far away. The Kanda River flows below, and Suidō Bridge crosses it at the bottom right. This print is from Hiroshige's One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, published in 1857.

On the fifth day of the fifth month of the old calendar, the Boys' Festival, families put up banners to wish for their sons to grow strong. In Edo, samurai houses raised banners with family crests, while townspeople began flying carp streamers. A Chinese legend says a carp that swims up a waterfall becomes a dragon. So the carp carries a wish for success. Hiroshige boldly made the nearby carp streamer fill the picture.

Surugadai was a hilly area with many samurai homes. Today it is around Ochanomizu and Suidōbashi in Tokyo. The name is said to come from retainers who moved there from Suruga, now Shizuoka, after Tokugawa Ieyasu died. Many copies were printed from the same blocks, so museums around the world own this design. The one you see belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
