This handscroll shows the busy capital of the Northern Song dynasty in China, Kaifeng. It is about 25 cm tall and 5.3 meters long. Here you see one part: the city gate. A line of camels with heavy loads walks through the gate tower. The court painter Zhang Zeduan painted it in the early 12th century. It is in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
You open a handscroll little by little, from right to left. This one starts in the quiet countryside. Then it shows big boats on the river at the Rainbow Bridge, and finally the city gate and the streets. By one count, there are 814 people: traders, boatmen, fortune tellers and cart pullers. It is also a valuable record of daily life at that time.
For hundreds of years, the scroll passed between emperors and collectors. It was so famous that many copies and new versions were made later. This original by Zhang Zeduan is one of China's most treasured paintings. It is rarely shown, and its exhibitions often draw long lines.

Almost everything we know about Zhang Zeduan comes from one short note added to the scroll by Zhang Zhu in 1186. It tells only a few things, like where he was from. The painter of this masterpiece is still a mystery.
While Puyi, the last Qing emperor, was still living in the Forbidden City, the scroll was secretly taken out of the palace as a "gift" to his brother Pujie. After the fall of Manchukuo, it was found again in 1951 and moved to the Palace Museum in 1953.
At the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the China Pavilion showed a giant animated version of this scroll, about 128 meters long. People walked, boats moved, and day turned into night. It was hugely popular.
Many think 'Qingming' in the title means the spring Qingming Festival. But some scholars say parts of the scene don't look like spring. They think 'Qingming' may mean 'a peaceful, well-ruled time' instead.
