Sharks, a waterspout, a broken mast. Will he survive? The painter answered…
A small boat with a broken mast drifts in a rough sea. A man lies on the deck, and sharks circle around him. Far away on the right is a waterspout, and on the left is a distant sailing ship. The American painter Winslow Homer, famous for his sea pictures, painted it in 1899, when he was in his sixties. It is one of his most famous works.
Homer often visited Florida and the Bahamas and made many watercolor sketches of the sea and sharks. The Gulf Stream is a strong ocean current in this area. After an exhibition in 1900, Homer reworked the painting. He changed the waves, made the boat's name, 'Anna – Key West', easy to read, and added a ship on the horizon.
In 1906, the judges of the National Academy exhibition urged the Metropolitan Museum to buy it, and the museum did so. The man looks calmly into the distance even in deadly danger. His image has moved many people and inspired modern painters and poets. His quiet gaze is the biggest mystery of the painting.
A man is on a small, broken boat. Sharks swim around him. A big storm is coming. People asked, 'Will he be OK?' The painter said, 'Yes, he will go home and be happy.'
When people worried about the man, Homer wrote, a little jokingly, that he 'will be rescued & returned to his friends and home'. He also said the boat and the sharks were not very important.
A man in danger from sharks reminds people of John Singleton Copley's famous 'Watson and the Shark' (1778). You could say Homer retold an older American masterpiece in a new way.
The sailing ship on the far left horizon was added after the painting was first shown in 1900. Will help come or not? The tiny ship makes us feel even more uneasy. Homer knew how to play with our feelings.
The brown and green sticks on the deck are sugarcane, a famous crop of the Caribbean. Maybe the man was carrying cargo between islands when the storm came. Small details give us clues to the story.
