The model lay in a bathtub for hours! A girl floating among perfectly painted plants.
This is Ophelia, a young woman from Shakespeare's play Hamlet. She has fallen into a stream with her flowers, and she floats away while singing. The painter, John Everett Millais, was only 22 years old. Every plant around her is painted in amazing detail, down to each single leaf.
Millais was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of young painters. They wanted to paint nature exactly as it is, so they worked outdoors in front of real things. In 1851, Millais painted the background by the Hogsmill River near London. He worked up to 11 hours a day, six days a week. He added the figure later in his studio.
The painting was shown at the Royal Academy in London in 1852. Later, Henry Tate, who made his fortune from sugar, gave it to the nation. Today it is one of the most popular works at Tate Britain. Many photos, films and illustrations have copied her floating pose.
A young woman is in a river. She is floating with flowers. She is from a play by Shakespeare. The model lay in a bathtub for this painting. The water got cold, and she caught a cold!
The model, Elizabeth Siddal, lay in a bathtub full of water, wearing the dress. Lamps under the tub kept the water warm, but they went out while Millais was busy painting. Siddal caught a bad cold, and her father asked Millais to pay 50 pounds for the doctor.
At first, Millais painted a water vole, caught in the river, next to Ophelia. But people who saw it could not tell what animal it was, so he painted it out. A rough sketch of it is said to remain in an upper corner, hidden by the frame.
Natsume Soseki studied in London and knew this painting. In his novel Kusamakura, the hero, a painter, keeps thinking of Millais's Ophelia. He wants to paint a woman floating in water. This painting has been linked to Japanese literature for over 100 years.
Most of the floating flowers match Ophelia's garland in the play, and each one has a meaning in the Victorian 'language of flowers'. But the bright red poppy is not in Shakespeare. The poppy stands for sleep and death, and Millais added it himself.

Her mouth is a little open, and her hands are spread out as if she is singing. She does not look afraid, and that makes the scene even more moving.
Red poppy
This red stands out against the greens and browns. It is the flower Millais added, which is not in Shakespeare's play.
Willow over the stream
In the play, Ophelia falls from a willow that grows over a stream. Millais painted the same kind of tree from the story.
Dress spread on the water
