A figure with a lantern knocks on a door at night. And the door has no handle on the outside.
In a garden at night, Christ, wearing a crown and holding a lantern, knocks on an old door covered with ivy and weeds. The picture shows the Bible words, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock." The British Pre-Raphaelite painter Hunt painted it and showed it at the Royal Academy in 1854. It is now at Keble College, University of Oxford.
It is said that Hunt worked outdoors at night to paint the moonlight and the lantern light realistically. (There are several stories about where he did this.) The door has no handle, which is said to mean that the door of the heart can only be opened from the inside. The weeds and ivy around it show that the door has been shut for a long time.
In 1873, the widow of Thomas Combe, an Oxford printer, gave the painting to Keble College. Printed copies hung in homes, schools and churches all over Britain, and it became one of the best-loved religious pictures of the Victorian age. The composer Arthur Sullivan was inspired by it to write an oratorio, a religious work of music, with the same title.

It is night. A man holds a lamp. He knocks on an old door. The door has no handle on the outside. Someone inside must open it.

When Keble College began charging people a fee to see the painting, Hunt was unhappy. So late in life, he painted a new, life-size version. That is the other "Light of the World" that now hangs in St Paul's Cathedral in London.
After it was finished, the St Paul's version toured Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and other places from 1905 to 1907. Huge crowds came to see it, and it is even said that most of Australia's population saw it. In 1908, it was placed in St Paul's Cathedral.
While he was painting the St Paul's version, Hunt was losing his sight because of glaucoma. The painter Edward Robert Hughes helped him finish it. A painter who was losing his sight was painting "The Light of the World".
Hunt used many people as models for Christ's face. Besides his own father and his painter friend Millais, the poet Christina Rossetti is said to have sat for the head. He combined many faces to find the ideal one.
